Health and Social Care

Work will involve practical caring for those in residential care centres, e.g. bathing, washing and helping with meals. You will also take part in social activities. In addition you will also gain experience in the 'Day Care' and 'Care in the Community' areas of Social Care. Some domestic and kitchen duties may be necessary.


In the first year, you will attend Shetland College one day per week to work towards an Intermediate 2 Care. There is an exam at the end of the year. This qualification will provide you with the underpinning knowledge (theory) of the job. In the second year, you will be work-based where you will compile a Portfolio of Evidence to prove you consistently work to the standard of the SCQF 6. Your college assessor will visit you to assess the standard of your work in the Care Centre and you will be required to attend monthly tutorials.

When you fully competent in all aspects of the job you will be awarded the SCQF 6 in Health and Social Care.


The duration of this programme is two years for SCQF 6.

Personal qualities, skills and qualifications:

  • Applicants will be required to have: good interpersonal and communication skills, positive attitude to customer group, non judgmental attitude, flexible and adaptable to the changing needs of the service
  • Applications must also be reliable and honest, have the ability to maintain confidentiality and be physically fit to understand the duties of the post
  • Applicants must have possession of National 5 in English, plus two other subjects at National 5 level
