Modern Apprenticeship in Agriculture

Overview

Typical duties will include feeding cows and sheep. Stirring, mixing and spreading slurry. Cleaning out sheds and pens. Working with tractors, fertilizing, working with silage, ploughing. Vaccinating and dosing animals. Dehorn calves. Trimming sheep and cows feet, working with sheep. General farm duties. Milking cows, washing dairy parlour.

You will have block release to SRUC Barony College usually on one week or two week blocks, five times a year.  You will be assessed via a mix of work place assessments, a collection of workplace evidence and completion of various short courses.

 

Programme Details

MA: Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 2 Agriculture (SCQF 5)

MA: Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 3 Livestock Production (SCQF 6)

The qualification is accredited through Scottish Qualifications Authority and awarded by Lantra.

The apprenticeship scheme runs over 2 years with attendance at SRUC Barony College, Dumfries.

 

Personal Qualities, Skills and Qualifications

Ideally applicants will have studied National 4/5s (or General /Credit Standard Grades) in subjects such as Maths, English and Science, although these are not essential.

 

A mature outlook and willingness to work as part of a team are essential.

 

Must be physically able for the tasks involved in the job and be prepared to work outdoors in all weathers.
