Number of vacancies: 1 More information: The company is a major civil and marine engineering contractor in Shetland. Some examples of large contracts have been the development of Cullivoe Pier, the Symbister slipway and the new Lerwick Fishmarket. Qualifications studied during the Modern Apprenticeship include a Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering and a Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 3 (SCQF 6) Construction Contracting Operations – Site Technical Support with the possibility of progressing on to SVQ4. College attendance will be block release at Inverness college with additional workbased assessment. The work of a civil engineer includes the planning of structures such as bridges, roads, drains, pipelines, piers, harbours and sea defences. Surveying land and computer aided drawing. Arranging laboratory analysis of soil, rock and materials samples. Preparing estimates of labour costs and the amounts and type of materials required for the job. Work is mostly office based with some site visits. Ideally applicants should have Highers in subjects such as: Maths, Graphic Design, Physics, Computing.
